-We've Used Man Pens Our Whole Lives-

Yesterday, I was watching Youtube and I saw this video in my subscription box. The video was about the company Bic, who had made pens "for her". Ellen makes fun of the sexist pens. The company had reached out to Ellen for them to collaborate and make a commercial. She denied Bic's offer and made her own commercial mocking their product. I agree with all the things that Ellen has to say about Bic.
The idea of pens designed for women is just ridiculous. That means that we have been using male pens for our whole lives. OH NO! It is bad enough that they made the pens "lady" colors, pink and purple. On top of this, these two pens retail for 19 dollars on Amazon. This is insane, considering the fact that a pack of 144 black ball point pens on Amazon is $13.71. Just because the pens are labeled differently, I do not believe that they should be price differently. The packaging uses word such as "beautifully smooth". This is a tactic that they use to draw women in, since most women buy things to make themselves feel "beautiful" such as makeup products and nice clothes.
Here is the advertisement for the Bic Pens. The message in this is beyond absurd. How can females look a like a girl by using their pens? These pens also cannot make one act more like a lady just because the pen somehow has the looks and message to be more feminine. Since when do pens identify your gender? Also the line that says "Think like a man," demonstrates that men are the superior who are the most educated. In this century that definitely is not the case because some women are smarter than men. As for the woman in this ad, Bic is helping media promote how successful women should appear: shiny white teeth, dressed in a nice business suit, and a good body.
With the slight intention of trying to make more money, Bic pushed the pen game too far this time that resulted in much criticism. It's very ironic how the ad is celebrating Women's Day yet the product itself is sexist. Pens cannot define how or what women should be like. After learning a bit more and analyzing Bic's products, I will not be purchasing from them anymore.

  1. I agree that having gender-specified pens is ridiculous. It makes no sense considering all pens are used for the same purpose and the same way by both men and women. I liked that you mentioned the more expensive price of the "women's" pens, considering there is an ongoing issue of female-specified drugstore items being more expensive than the same product created for men.
